The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona is one of the most desired timepieces on the planet. Classified as professional models, they serve some purpose and are made with a niche community in mind: racecar drivers. In the company’s website, the brand mentioned that it is a watch for winners. But this does not mean that you cannot have it if you are not a racecar driver.

You can have a piece of it regardless of your background. For a price, that is. Which may cost an arm and a leg. Why is this the case? Read on for details.

Value and credibility

When we talk about vintage Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, we cannot help but talk about exceptional levels of value and collectibility. In line with this, it is important to note that the first generation models of the said timepiece are the only true “vintage” Daytona models.

That is because they are the only ones that are backed by manual-wind movements and acrylic crystals–further cementing–their overall value and credibility.

Exotic dials

If your Rolex Cosmograph Daytona comes with Paul Newman dials, then it adds a sense of exclusivity, since not all Rolexes are backed by this. They are dials that are available in variations either with black dials that are complemented by white subdials or black with white subdials (Panda dials) on stainless steel material. Those that are extremely rare are vintage Rolex Daytona models that come with floating text or small dial changes.

Tropical dials

Tropical dials are rare for their surface finishes that become discolored after some time. Take note that this is actually not a feature design, it is an abnormality due to miniature imperfections in the finish that turns dials from black to something with a touch of brown.

Since it is extremely rare, it has become a collectible feature and you would be surprised how many are willing to pay steep amounts just to add a Rolex Daytona in their collection.

Limited production runs

The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona has relatively limited production runs. The fact that it was not popular in the past–that contributed to low production–plays a role here. Fast forward to the 21st century and it has become extremely popular. However, rather than boosting production, the company kept its numbers low in order to preserve the model’s value. Also, it is important to note that the Daytona’s movement is not shared in other models. That’s why Rolex cannot just ramp up production on a whim.

Has a long wait list

If you think that you can just head over to a watch store and buy a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, then you are wrong. This particular model comes with a long and sometimes, multi-year waiting list. That is because when Rolex sends Daytona watches to retailers, they just do not put Daytona in the window for selling. They usually have a long list of clients who made reservations.

So, if you are contemplating getting one, make reservations now since you may have to wait several years to get the watch of your dreams.

Summing up

With the right combination of high value, high desirability, and rarity, among others, the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona is a worthwhile buy that is one for the books if you are starting your watch collection. Yes, it comes with a steep price, but rest assured that it is all going to be worth it.
